War in Ukraine: children and families need help

Support children and families affected by war, flight and great need.

The war in Ukraine has been going on for more than two years now. The extent of the destruction and the humanitarian situation in the country are catastrophic. Children and families need help.

  • It is estimated that over 11,000 civilians have already been killed by shelling and bombing, including more than 600 children, and many more have been injured.

  • Many schools and kindergartens have been destroyed or damaged, and countless children are no longer able to attend classes.

  • According to current estimates, almost 6 million Ukrainians have fled abroad, the majority of whom are women and children

  • Almost 3.7 million people are on the run in their own country.

  • Many children and adults suffer severely from the psychological consequences of experiencing violence and flight, fear and a lack of prospects.

How we help:

The humanitarian aid provided by SOS Children's Villages began immediately after the outbreak of war and has continued unabated ever since. SOS Children's Villages employees support Ukrainian children and families. In addition to acute emergency aid, affected families also receive long-term support.

  • SOS Children's Villages has set up social centres at safe locations in central and western Ukraine. So far, around 113,000 refugee children and families have been supported there with relief supplies, counselling and psychosocial support.

  • Over 70 child protection centres offer play and learning opportunities for children, which have already been used by around 60,000 children.

  • Around 65,000 children and parents have received psychological and psychosocial support so far. Psychologically trained specialists are helping to deal with shock and war trauma. Thanks to mobile teams, they can also reach remote areas.

  • With our support, over 1,100 children with war injuries receive medical assistance, rehabilitation and psychological support.

  • The SOS Children's Villages support foster families and are committed to the long-term placement of children who have lost their parents.

  • Over 28,000 people have received financial support, including for the purchase of food.

  • Almost 400 of those affected were able to find new employment and income opportunities through training and vocational training programmes.

  • As part of the winter aid programme, SOS Children's Villages distributes relief supplies to families, e.g. firewood, blankets, kettles, heaters, winter clothing and shoes.
