In many countries and communities, there are hardly any education and training places. Yet every child has the right to education - it is the key to a self-determined future. But millions of children are denied this right because they live in poverty, are at war, have to flee or are girls. Only through access to education children can break the cycle of poverty and achieve social participation. 

  • Around 250 million children worldwide are currently unable to go to school.
  • Millions of girls are married off every year instead of continuing school, depriving them of their right to education.
  • Many children are forced into child labour and are therefore unable to attend school.

How we help: 

Educational work is a focal point of the global commitment of SOS Children's Villages. We run our own kindergartens, schools and vocational training centres. In this way, we ensure that the children receive a sound education. However, our educational facilities are also open to girls and boys from the neighbourhoods of our SOS Children's Villages. In addition, a central aim of the SOS Children's Villages family aid programme is to give children in vulnerable families access to education, for example by helping with school fees. 

  • Early childhood education: Children receive educational support in daycare centres, kindergartens and social centres run by SOS Children's Villages. We also organise childcare through childminders and train childminders.

  • School education: We run our own schools at many locations and support children from poor families, especially girls, with school fees, school materials and funding for teaching staff to give them access to education. 

  • Vocational training: We offer young people vocational education, training, coaching and internships in cooperation with companies to prepare them for the labour market. 

  • Further education for adults: We offer training and further education courses, help start-ups with microloans and provide scholarships for talented school leavers to study. We also train educators in our own centres.

  • Special educational initiatives:  The EduCare initiative of SOS Children's Villages helps vulnerable children in a number of African countries to finish school, improves their health and water supply, and reduces climate-related poverty through ‘Green Projects’ for sustainable agriculture.
