SOS Children's Villages supports families in need by helping them help themselves. Around the world, SOS Children's Villages assists families in need who are at immediate risk of breaking apart.

Often, it is single mothers who receive this support. In developing countries, single mothers frequently find themselves in desperate situations: There is often neither government assistance nor a legal obligation to provide child support—and many women never had the chance to go to school or learn a trade.

By strengthening families, SOS Children’s Villages makes a lasting contribution to development cooperation. In this way, we are committed to the fight against global poverty, which affects children and families particularly hard.

How we help:

Family strengthening encompasses a wide range of support, counseling, and educational services aimed at children in need and their parents. The goal is always to gradually empower families to shape their own future.

Help with school fees, a sewing machine, chickens for a poultry farm - often it doesn’t take much for a family to break the cycle of poverty. SOS Children’s Villages’ family strengthening program provides help for self-help - so that parents can offer their children a future on their own. 

  • Ensuring basic needs: The SOS Children's Villages help families in acute need with food parcels, seeds, clothing and medical care to prevent them from falling apart.

  • School education for children: The SOS Children's Villages support families in need with school fees, uniforms and teaching materials to ensure that both girls and boys have access to education, and offer remedial classes for pupils who have dropped out of school. 

  • Further training and microloans:The SOS Children's Villages offer education and training courses, career counselling and start-up assistance such as microloans to help families improve their income and escape poverty. The support is limited in time: to three to five years. 

  • Self-help groups & networks: The SOS Children's Villages Family Strengthening programme supports the formation of self-help groups and works with people in the respective communities. Examples include the association of single mothers from Latin America or volunteers from local communities who support SOS Children's Villages in the fight against AIDS in African countries. 

  • Counselling & education:The SOS Children's Villages offer families in need advice on their rights, support in dealing with the authorities, career counselling, literacy courses and information events on children's, women's and workers' rights.
